One object, 50 different ways

This week the goal was to pick one everyday object, and create 50 different renderings of that object, in any way, shape, or form we wanted. I’ve done a few different versions of assignments similar to this when I was in undergrad, so I’m kind of familiar with this concept. And with being an artist and designer, it is important to be able to visually represent something a multitude of ways.

So what was something that we see pretty much everyday, but don’t pay much attention to? Sneakers! Not just any type of shoe, but specifically sneakers. I have a slight obsession for a good sneaker, particularly Nike’s, and am slowly but surely building up a collection. Taste in shoes varies from person to person, but I’m pretty sure everyone at some point in their life has owned a pair of sneakers. And because of the fact that they can vary in shape, color, size, and detail, I thought they would be an interesting thing to portray from my own perspective. So instead of doing one shoe 50 different ways, I did a total of 50 renderings, some of them in the same medium or style, but changing up the shoe, because no two sneakers are alike, and they each feature different qualities.

Tools Used:

  1. Ipad Pro & Procreate
  2. Photoshop

Sketches _ Renderings 1–26:

I wanted to start off with something a little basic. Getting back to the drawing board, literally, I started with drawing some colored pencil sketches of a bunch of different types of my favorite sneakers, ones that I actually own, or ones that I wish to own some day. Everyone has a particular brand or shoe in mind when they hear the word “sneaker,” so I wanted to try and capture in the simplest way, what different sneakers look like.

From there I wanted to explore a little bit more outside of the shoe as a whole, and experiment with some different ideas while still keeping everything simplistic.

Photos // Renderings 27–34:

After working on some the sketches, I decided that I wanted to switch it up a little and take pictures of sneakers that I actually own. But instead of just focusing on the whole shoe, I wanted to focus on specific details, and aspects that people might generally overlook.

Digital Illustration // Renderings 35–40:

I decided that I wanted to take those sketches I did earlier, and transform them into something a little more realistic. And in this stage, I wanted to focus more on color, texture and pattern, as well as using a multitude of mediums in procreate.

Brands // Renderings 41–45:

When we hear the word sneaker, we usually think of particular brands associated with shoes specifically. So what better way to say “sneaker” other than brands that are known for selling just that?

Unconventional Designs // Renderings 46–50:

I wanted to also show how sneakers are becoming more of an art form. A lot of times, when people think of sneakers, they’re just something to keep your feet covered. But they can be so much more than that, and people are using them as a means of self expression in very creative ways.
